East side Pride

If you didn't have a chance to read Toledo City Paper this week, I'd suggest stopping by to read the article by Amanda Wolfe on East Toledo. I learned some things I wasn't aware of, you might too.

:-)

Bowling with Ben...

A week ago, Mayor Carty Finkbeiner said he'd like to see Toledo shed its image as a "shot-and-a-beer, factory bowling alley town. While of course I understand he was trying to imply he wants our area to have a larger economic base, Bowling is a favorite past time here in Toledo.

Ben Konop, who would like to be your next Lucas County Commissioner, has come forward with evidence that he is a bowler. Well, he's kind of a bowler, I could tease him that even my youngest daughter has a higher average than 130 but then I come from a family of Bowlers.

Ben has announced his Bowling Tour along with asking for pledges:

I'll be bowling twelve games this week, one at every alley in the county. So if you want to give me an added incentive to knock some pins down, consider pledging to donate 1, 5, 10 or 20 cents per pin to the campaign (giving guideline: my average is about 130). Email me with your pledge here: ben@benkonop.com

The schedule of which lanes he will be at is on the link. Then we can discover some of the real truths like...does he own his own bowling shoes does he rent them? What pound bowling ball does he use? Does he have a hook? How many gutterballs will be thrown? This sounds like a back alley job for this blogger to see if she can get some evidence on these details....

:-)

The Toledo Blade's Joshua Boak updates us with what we wondered...

14-pound ball, we knew the rented shoes and Ben was strike free yesterday...I'm assuming no gutterballs or Joshua would have probably mentioned that.

While I know Ben has a very good sense of humor with my above comments, I also know that this was more than just about gutterballs. He is out there talking to people in Lucas County, Ben knows people are concerned about jobs. Which is going to make more of an impact? Real one to one conversation or reading quotes from a newspaper? (Or even a blog for that matter). That to me counts as the right direction for a perfect 300.

When to cross the line....

I love writing my weekly column, Blog it, Toledo! for the Toledo Free Press. I've never hidden that I have an ulterior motive in trying to get more Toledo area residents to not only read more blogs but maybe even consider blogging themselves.

Sometimes it's hard though, some of the blogs I've read especially on Myspace, share such deep emotional pain or distress that it feels like you are almost a voyeur. Some of them use language that isn't appropriate to link in a newspaper without some type of "adult rated warning" and others? Wow, people would be embarrassed if their latest drinking escapade made the Toledo Free Press.

That's where the decision of when to cross the line comes in. While part of me wants to hug some of those in pain, or remind a few that their party antics might not be something they want to share with the open internet? I have to temper that with what my main goal is, which is to want more of you to join me.

There are a few blogs I have my eye on that are sooo outrageous? Are tempting....very tempting....

Leprechaun Latte

People have come to this blog thru lots of search terms; Sherrod Brown, Paul Hackett, Lucas County Young Democrats, and various other political and local related search terms. However, I just happened to note this was the search question that lists my blog in the top spot at Technorati....

"leprechaun latte"

While of course I can say I have experienced the wonders of the "leprechaun latte" I would hope those seeking the "leprechaun latte" would visit the nearest Beaner's

:-)

Dear Lucas County Democratic Party....

I realize that you are busy and primary season is among us...but don't you think it's time someone updated the "Elected Official Page"?

Here are just two of the many that are pretty far off now:

Jack Ford Mayor of the City of Toledo
Wade Kapszukiewicz Toledo City Council

BTW Lucas County Republican Party?

You aren't exactly "on top" of your webpage either. Unless of course as one example, you don't think This guy is a Republican....

I realize it's obvious County Political Parties don't place a great deal of importance on internet resources but is not that hard of a job nor does it require large sums of money to keep names up to date.

Which ever one of you updates first and let's me know you updated? Gets a wonderful post in several places about how I was wrong and you do care about those of us who are more "internet oriented".

Blog it, Toledo!

After you get done visiting the local blogs highlighted this week, make sure to read some of the other exclusive online content and my personal favorite this week, Everybody Loves Michael

In addition to the cover story about the possibility of a strike at the Blade and the terrorism story that broke yesterday, Ironhead Marine coming to Toledo is also good news for our area.

I guess I'm going to have to try this new Suduko thing that everyone is raving about, and yes I will practice before showing it to my kids so I stand a chance at being a bit faster than they are.

:-)

Interesting tidbits....

I do alot of websearching, so I have alot of websites saved as favorites; yesterday on Toledo Talk there was the question of how many Olympic Atheletes have come from this area?

I think you'll be amazed to see how much talent this area has as far as sports history. This is an older link but contains alot of really good information:

Local area atheletes

I've spent hours at Toledo's Attic if you've never visited? Stop by..

Lucas County Young Democrats Meeting

I'll put up the portion of the meeting where Sherrod Brown was speaking later tonight, and will put it below this. While I love Beaner's, the upstairs location was not conducive to good taping, I did take very extensive notes so when the house is a bit quieter (as in Aubrey is in bed) I will attempt to transcribe as many direct quotes as I can from my tape and notes. On a personal note, the Leprechaun Latte? A definite winner as far as taste.

However, there were a few things discussed that I felt deserved "individual billing":

Yearly memberships are being accepted to join the Lucas County Young Democrats, the cost is only $10.00 a year with a $5.00 a year membership offered to College Students. If you are over 35 and are interested in supporting this group? They offer an honorary membership for $50.00 a year.

On March 3, it will be LCYD Happy Hour at the Bronze Boar from 6 to 8 p.m. They not only invite you to attend but bring a friend or two! I'll be lurking in the back without a name tag. :-)

Jack Wilson of the Lucas County Democratic Party would also like you to know that on March 17th the Annual Jigg’s Dinner will be held, there is a donation of $15.00 for this event and it is one of the few fundraising events they hold each year. So all of you Lucas County Dems, make sure you mark your calendars. Click here for more information on this event.

The turnout for tonight's meeting was very good and as always I had a very nice time talking with those present and I thank Kevin Cooper and Jason Hill especially for making me feel so welcome.

Sherrod Brown speaks to LCYD and UT Dems....

Sherrod Brown spoke for about 25 minutes, I've tried my best to transcribe what I could from the tape and work from my notes that I took of direct quotes, and points while he spoke. As I've done before with similar events, I have tried to not interject my opinion but to try to present what was said.

Sherrod Brown started with an introduction that included the significance of his canary in a cage pin that he and his staff wears. He has a very thorough explanation on his website so I will not duplicate that here.

He stressed that because of what has happened the past five years under President Bush is why it is so important that he win this Senate race and that Ted Strickland be elected Governor as well as democrats statewide like Tom Osowik for the Court of Appeals (who was present) win this November.

Sherrod stated that he was there to "ask all of the Lucas County Young Democrats and UT College Dems to step up this year like you never have before for Strickland for Governor and me for the Senate and one of the things that I'm urging every other Democratic candidate this year to do is get the minimum wage petition circulated, to get the minimum wage on the ballot, that when all of us every single one from top to bottom campaigns, we all say vote November 7th for minimum wage and while you are there vote for Strickland for Governor and Brown for US Senate and Congress right down the line....I need your help this year more than any of you have ever stepped up before, I know you worked hard for Kerry two years ago and we came that close, we are going to go into the rural counties, Ted Strickland and I are going to Putnam County day after tomorrow together." He then went on to list the other counties that they are going to cover.

Questions from those present were next. He was asked considering how close the loss was with Kerry how 2006 was going to be different. One of the main reasons Sherrod felt that Kerry did not win was Florida who had a minimum wage bill on the ballot and he did not think Kerry even mentioned that once. He feels that by using the minimum wage ballot iniative the way the Republicans used the marriage amendment would create the necessary support to win. He stated that the minimum wage amendment "would be a pay raise for at least 300,000 people plus those who were above $6.85 would benefit as well". (Columbus Dispatch article for those wanting more information on this issue.)

Another statement I felt important to include is Sherrod's response to being questioned in the future on his intelligence/defense stance, "I'm coming right back with they are spending a billion and a half dollars a day on the war in Iraq, Condeleeza Rice said this war could last ten more years and how many more thousands of Americans will be killed or injured badly, badly injured; how many more Iraqis will be injured or killed and what do we have to show for it? A billion and a half dollars a day, that's money we ought to be spending protecting our ports, not hiring a UAE country to protect our ports; to protect our chemical plants, our water systems and our nuclear power plants and we're not doing that. A bi-partisan commission gave Homeland Security Department an F, these guys are failing at this every day and they are not going to get away with it."

The next question was about college tuition costs and assistance. Sherrod Brown stated that in 2000 President Bush has promised to raise the Pell Grant assitance income level to 51,000 and still had not done that. This is an issue that he and Ted Strickland that are concerned about. He remembered a recent time when the grant to debt ration was 70% grants 30% debt and stated today it was the opposite. He agreed that costs and assistance were an issue stating that there is "No focus on higher education from this State." He went on to talk about No Child Left Behind and how that has never been funded the way it was promised.

He was asked about the Tax Payer bill of rights and explained that he now feels that part of the problem is that Republicans are allowed to write some of these bills, giving the example of the Estate Tax being called the "Death Tax" when the majority of Americans will never have to pay it. He used Colorado as an example of what happens to a state where Conservatives are allowed free reign as far as legislation. He then continued with "We don't talk enough as progressive Democrats about what Government can do as a positive force in people's lives....we need to be particularly agressive in using these two ballot initiatives to sell your fellow students...to make the connection as to what goes on in government and in their personal lives; pointing out Republican corruption; making the connection to their corruption and higher workman's compensation costs; their corruption and higher heating bills for their homes, their corruption and higher gasoline prices; their corruption and higher tuition bills." (Not all of this could be transcribed due to the background sound so this quote is from my notes)

The deficit came up next, Sherrod used the comparison of a billion dollars pointing out that if a person spent a dollar every second of every hour, every day it would take you 31 years to spend a billion dollars. Right now we have a deficit of about 7 trillion dollars, with an additional 400 billion dollars a year added which does not count the 70 billion a year for the war in Iraq. His two main points on helping to reduce the deficit is to not renew the tax cuts second to create an exit strategy for Iraq. He felt that it was our not setting a firm date of withdrawl has made the Iraqis not try as hard to take responsibility that they had the impression that we would never leave. That without a firm exit date there is no incentive for the Iraqi people. He related how he felt it was wrong that we were spending that much in Iraq when here in Toledo he visited the local Food bank where cuts are going to be made that will affect hundreds of thousands who are not on public assistance but depend on places like the Seaway Food Bank. Programs like that is not where he feels cuts should be made.

I then asked a question, Given his policy on Iraq how he felt about Iran and what he would do as a Senator if a vote were to come to take force against Iran with them building their nuclear power. He told me he really didn't know what he would do, but he didn't support force at this point. He didn't think we knew enough at this point to make that kind of a decision or have the intelligence yet to know what we should do in Iran. He felt that we needed to "engage the Russians better than we have" that several issues led to the problems in Iran including that we have ignored them diplomatically. He felt we were too stretched in our troop levels to deal with North Korea or Iran and that "ultimately we need to push the Russians to get more engaged with the Iranian government because they can talk to Iran in ways that others in the western world with the possible exception of the French can."

Voter turnout was the next question. He first concentrated on how people needed to be aware of how especially the elderly had been hurt by changes to Medicare and Medicaid. He said what the Republicans have done was "damned near criminal". Sherrod encouraged all present to actively try to not only make sure people are registered to vote but to encourage them to get others to register and vote as well. "To make it their mission to talk to at least one person a week." He related a story of how his mother and a friend set up a table at a local grocery store and got over 300 people to register to vote as well as encouraging them to get others to register to vote so that the two of them created at least 700 new voters. He stressed the importance of following up with people to keep them engaged.

The last question was about Mike DeWine and the differences between he and Sherrod. Sherrod stated that he was on the opposite of almost every issue with Mike DeWine and that he didn't feel his seniority argument was a valid one given his performance as a Senator the past 15 years. That while Mike DeWine himself was not corrupt that he hadn't stood up enough for Ohioans and that Sherrod "wants the state back the way it was when he grew up".

Update: Jim Tankersley from the Toledo Blade also wrote about Sherrod's Toledo visits He provides a corrected finish to one quote I stated from my notes as "They are not going to get away with it":

"When they go after me on defense and intelligence and all that, I'm going right back at them," Mr. Brown said. Later, he added: "These guys are failing at [national security] every day. They're not going to get away with saying we're soft, because we're not."

Lucas County Latino Caucus and Ted Strickland

This La Prensa story "Strickland campaign hits big brown bump Ohio-governor hopeful encounters Latino opposition" is I think an important one. Especially when you consider the huge attention that was made to just one immigration comment by Paul Hackett. Yet, it made barely a "bump" in the Main Stream Media.

Cleveland Plain Dealer and here:

About three dozen people protested outside the grand opening of the Cleveland office of U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland's gubernatorial campaign Saturday afternoon.

The demonstrators, organized by the Coalition of Latino Pastors of Northeast Ohio, voiced objections to Strickland's vote in December for the "Border Protection, Antiterrorism and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005."

Among its provisions, the bill, now before the Senate, would make illegal immigrants (and anyone who helps them) subject to criminal charges under federal law.

After meeting with members of the coalition, Strickland said he understands and shares some of their concerns. He described the bill's passage as a "first step," noting that it would return to the House for a final vote.

"I assume and hope that a lot of the onerous provisions will be removed," he said. "If not, I will not support it in its final form."

San Diego Indymedia covers it but gets the number of Democrats who voted for it wrong, they state:

On Saturday, the Coalition of Latino Pastors of Northeast Ohio organized a protest at the new office of House Rep. Ted Strickland, one of 16 democrats who voted in favor of the bill.

What bothers me is given Strickland was the only Ohio Democrat who voted for this bill why? It did not even get across the board support from all Ohio Republicans. Given the "onerous provisons":

The erection of almost 700 miles of wall, separating the United States and México, whose border is almost 2,000 miles in length.

The bill would make any person working, serving or employing any undocumented immigrant, a felon. This would include any organization that services migrants. Mandatory sentencing ranges for persons aiding or assisting certain reentering aliens.

The bill makes it more difficult for legal permanent residents to become U.S. citizens.

What was it exactly about this bill that he felt was worth voting Yes on? Only 36 Democratic Congresspersons joined him in voting "Aye".

Thanks to Govtrack it's easy to discover how our Ohio Representatives voted:

Rep. Ted Strickland [D-OH] voted Aye.
Rep. Steven Chabot [R-OH] voted Aye.
Rep. Jean Schmidt [R-OH] voted Aye.
Rep. Michael Oxley [R-OH] voted Aye.
Rep. Paul Gillmor [R-OH] voted Aye.
Rep. Steven LaTourette [R-OH] voted Aye.
Rep. Deborah Pryce [R-OH] voted Aye.
Rep. Ralph Regula [R-OH] voted Aye.
Rep. Robert Ney [R-OH] voted Aye.

Rep. Marcy Kaptur [D-OH] voted Nay.
Rep. Dennis Kucinich [D-OH] voted Nay.
Rep. Stephanie Jones [D-OH] voted Nay.
Rep. Sherrod Brown [D-OH] voted Nay.
Rep. Timothy Ryan [D-OH] voted Nay.
Rep. Michael Turner [R-OH] voted Nay.
Rep. David Hobson [R-OH] voted Nay.
Rep. John Boehner [R-OH] voted Nay.
Rep. Patrick Tiberi [R-OH] voted Nay.

I do believe we have to do something about illegal immigration, however this bill at first glance seems more punative towards illegal immigrants rather than addressing the real reasons why illegal immigration from Mexico exists. I also find it very hypocritical that this has not been made a major issue with Strickland. Paul Hackett makes one comment and David Sirota jumps in as well as Talk Left calling him the Tancredo of the Democrats. Yet Strickland did more than just make a statement, he voted for this bill.

There is one group that seems happy about the Strickland vote, The Ohio Jobs and & Justice PAC

Primary Candidates and the Internet

Using the list of the candidates from the above linked Toledo Blade I decided to search to see if any of our Lucas County candidates had websites. Talk about being disgusted with both the Democrat and Republican Parties of Lucas County and Ohio. They list NO information as to websites for candidates. The State sites are even worse than the County ones as far as badly needing an update. Contract with Ohio was the only place I could find some information and the majority of Democrats have not signed the Contract with Ohio nor do they have campaign websites/blogs listed. Candidates with ** after their name have signed the Contract with Ohio. I then started searching name by name and found several of the candidate websites that way.

●Ohio House District 6: Democrats Jeffery Bretz of North Baltimore and of Perrysburg and Republican Robert Latta of Bowling Green (incumbent).

●Ohio House District 46: State Rep. Mark Wagoner (R., Ottawa Hills), running unopposed.

●Ohio House District 47: State Rep. Peter Ujvagi (D., Toledo) and Republican Ernest Berry of Toledo.

●Ohio House District 48: State Rep. Edna Brown (D, Toledo) and Republican Carolyn Eyre of Toledo.

●Ohio House District 49: Republican Stephen Hornyak of Oregon and Democrat Matthew Szollosi of Oregon.

●Ohio Senate District 11: State Sen. Teresa Fedor** (D, Toledo) and Republican Chris Mueller of Toledo.

●U.S. House District 5: U.S. Rep. Paul Gillmor (R., Old Fort) and Democrat Robin Weirauch** of Napoleon.

●U.S. House District 9: U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) and Republicans Ed Emery of Sylvania, Bradley S. Leavitt of Toledo, and Dirk Kubala of Toledo.

Robin Weirauch in Ohio Congressional District 5 gets my early pick for the best website by a non-incumbent at this point. It's updated, and it's very user friendly. Too bad she's not in my district as I like what I see so far.

These names will be added to the sidebar and as soon as more become available I will update.

Opening Doors....

As I read the Toledo Free Press, this struck a chord with me:

Next Wednesday, Feb. 22, Toledo Free Press will host its sixth Community Voices Forum. Co-sponsored by ToledoTalk.com, the forum will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cold Fusion in Cricket West. Cold Fusion owner Jamie Young is offering free coffee to participants.

The purpose of the forum is to allow members of the community to talk, on the record, about any issue they wish to address. The first five forums have collected the thoughts of Toledoans on topics as disparate as the war in Iraq and the need for more Downtown nightlife.

We encourage our readers to support this experiment of accessibility. There are not many opportunities for directly impacting the content and direction of the local media. We've opened the door; it's up to you to walk in and tell us what's on your mind.

Especially that last line....We've opened the door; it's up to you to walk in and tell us what's on your mind.

I think that is one opportunity that blogging has given me as well, it's opened doors. Things I never would have thought possible almost a year ago when I started Liberal Common Sense. It's not just my blogging that did this though, it was part luck of being in the right place at the right time and because I made the decision that I wanted to do more than just sit behind my keyboard and tell people what I thought. I wanted to be involved, not necessarily as part of just one political group but part of a community. There is a growing number of local bloggers that share my feeling so? We are taking the next step.

Creating our own local group where bloggers meet and have a chance to talk not only with each other or local candidates, or various City/County officials but others, the possibilities are endless for us as far as what the scope of these types of meetings can be about. If you are interested in being involved in the initial planning, please email me at glasscityjungle@gmail.com and tell me what day/time is best for you so we can try to create a time that will work for as many who are interested as possible, or make a second meeting time.

We've already shown we care because we write about this area, we debate things with knowledge, passion and concern; if we can find a common ground here? Imagine what we could accomplish in the real world.....

:-)

Thank you WUPW!

If you missed Fox news tonight, the above link is about the feature they had tonight on local blogging. Of course I'm biased, but I think it was very well done. A special thanks to Karl Rundgren for doing the story and Dan for filming the video.

Maggie Thurber will not seek re-election

The Toledo Free Press has the announcement

History Mike also reported he heard this announcement thru WSPD.

Who will be running as a Republican for this Lucas County Commissioner spot?

Sounds like either:

Sylvania School Board Vice President Pam Haynam who became a board member in January 1998. She is the owner of a small technology consulting firm, and has over twenty-five years experience in Toledo's Fortune 500 companies. Ms. Haynam is a Miami University graduate with a B.S. in Applied Science. Ms. Haynam also holds an MBA in Finance from The University of Toledo. She actively volunteers in the school district and was Sylvania Schools 1997 Educator of the Year for Community Volunteerism. She and her husband, Doug, have three children; two attending Southview High School; and a 2003 graduate of Southview High School.

or

George Sarantou (who really needs to have his city bio updated)

George Sarantou is the newest At-Large Member of Toledo City Council. He was elected as one of 12 Council Members on November 6, 2001 and was sworn into office on January 2, 2002. He is employed by New England Financial Group as a Registered Representative, and is a leader in Sales with many notable accomplishments. His skills in finance, as well as his passion for community service is a valued asset to Toledo City Council. The father of 3 daughters Mr. Sarantou and his wife Barbara reside in West Toledo.

Deadline is tomorrow so guess we'll find out then if it will be one or both of them. I predict both....

Toledo Young Republican Club Charity Event

There is also still time to plan to attend 2006 Ronald Reagan Birthday Benefit
to aid the Alzheimer's Association, it is tomorrow night. All are welcome, this is a non-partisan event.

Bob Franz will be the key note speaker. More information available on their website as well as on Bob's blog

I'm still hoping on being able to attend, can't confirm it at this point but this is a very worthy cause. My grandmother had Alzheimer's so I know first hand what families go thru in dealing with this disease.

Sherrod Brown coming to Toledo!

Lucas County Young Democrats and UT College Democrats have just confirmed that Sherrod Brown will be their sponsored speaker this coming Monday, February 20th at the Cricket West Beaner's location. It is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.

I'm looking forward to hearing what Sherrod has to say and for those of you who can't make the event? I'll be blogging about it afterwards. Both the LCYD and UT College Dems have earned my respect as well as admiration of their energy and determination to continue to work towards making our area the best it can be for all of us. (Even middle aged bloggers they let sit in.)

Beaner's website where you can find directions and also see what type of specials they have. Having been there a few times now I'm thinking a Leprechaun Latte sounds pretty tasty.

Journaling the Toledo City Journal...

As a way to keep up to date on what's going on in Toledo City Council, I've been reading the City Journal for a few weeks now. It gives you a summary of what was presented and voted on during that particular City Council meeting.

Most of it is pretty straight forward, however this Bid Proposal caught my eye:

Photography Services

For Recreation Programs & Special Events For The Department Of Parks, Recreation & Forestry

Sealed proposals will be received at the Purchasing office, 19th Floor, One Government Center, Suite 1970, Toledo, Ohio, 43604, until 2:00 p.m.(local time): TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2006, for the Administration Division of the Department of Parks, Recreation & Forestry. A pre-proposal conference will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2006, beginning at 900 a.m. at the Department of Parks, Recreation & Forestry, 2201 Ottawa Park Dr., Toledo, OH 43606. All proposals must be made on the Proposal Form that with specifications, etc., may be obtained upon application at the Purchasing office.

General questions pertaining to the availability of the specifications or any other general information may be directed to the Purchasing Division, Carol Landin, a (419) 245-1155. Technical questions regarding the specifications should be directed to the Project Manager, Larry Anderson, Parks Administration, at (419) 936-2873.

I found it strange that the Parks, Recreation and Forestry department didn't have some one who could perform this as a part of events. However, since I know several of my readers are very good photographers? You might want to act on this opportunity.

Tom Noe indicted on 53 felony counts

I just posted about this on Liberal Common Sense since it was a story I wrote about there back on May 1st of 2005. Since it is a local story, I am crossposting here as well. The Toledo Blade article is linked above and I'm sure more information/news will follow today's unsealing of the indictment.

UPDATE: Toledo Free Press has a statement by Bernadette Noe

Weekly Media Round up

In addition to some of the alternative media sources, there were a few articles in the Toledo Blade that didn't get as much attention as they might have due to the Bob McCloskey story.

Ben Konop, who also entered the blogosphere last week had an article written about his campaign and his ethics pledge.

The pledge, which Mr. Konop wrote, calls for establishing a county organization that would monitor officeholders in tandem with the Ohio Ethics Commission.

It stipulates that elected officials should "accept no outside income while in office" and "serve the full duration" of their terms.

The pledge supports requiring campaign donors to disclose whether they have any contracts with the county.

Paul Hackett was featured in an article today's Toledo Blade. It's another recommended read.

Johnny Hildo was absent from this week's edition of the Toledo City Paper hopefully not because he was "thumped" by a letter to the editor. This weeks main feature was a very well done article on Claudia David-Roscoe of Claudia’s Natural Food Market.

La Prensa writes about the upcoming 5th annual Mardi Gras party complete with costumes, music by the KGB, a strolling magician, festive drinks, and, of course, Cajun food, and Mardi Gras beads. This event is sponsored by The Fair Housing Center at Gumbo’s Bayou Grille at the Docks in International Park on February 23, 2006. (Personal note, Gumbo's is one of my favorite places to go when I want to feel like I am in New Orleans.)

There are several really good articles at the Toledo Free Press, if you haven't checked out this last week's edition? Now's the time!

Looks like they should have listened to Frank....

With the news that Bob McCloskey has been indicted, it was also reported on Fox 36 News that Bob McCloskey had contacted Toledo City Council President Rob Ludeman to inform him he was going to step down as chairman of its economic development committee.

Recently, February 1st to be exact, the Toledo Blade reported:

Toledo City Council seated Councilman Robert McCloskey last night as chairman of its economic development committee.

Councilman Frank Szollosi called the move "an embarrassment" and urged his colleagues to deny Mr. McCloskey the committee chairmanship because of a $10 million lawsuit against both the city and Mr. McCloskey, alleging improprieties.

"McCloskey's distractions have damaged City Council [and] the City of Toledo and undermine our collective efforts to attract and maintain jobs," Mr. Szollosi said.

He said his amendment was intended to "spare Toledo and our region the embarrassment and damage" of having Mr. McCloskey in charge of the economic development committee.

Mr. Szollosi offered an amendment to the resolution naming the new appointments that would have deleted mention of Mr. McCloskey, thereby keeping himself as committee chairman. That amendment gained only one other vote, that of Councilman Michael Ashford, and was defeated. Mr. McCloskey, Mr. Szollosi, and Mr. Ashford are all Democrats.

The resolution containing the appointments recommended by council President Rob Ludeman, a Republican, was then approved 11-1, with Mr. Szollosi voting no.

I think this was a major error on the part of Rob Ludeman, and if for some reason he didn't want Frank Szollosi to remain the Chair? There were others who would were not in the middle of controversy. Today's indictment proves that Frank had some valid concerns. It also calls into question the ability of Toledo City Council to make hard decisions. While Bob McCloskey is innocent until proven guilty, given the civil lawsuit was well known as still pending sometimes it's better to be safe than sorry; especially when it comes to appointing Chair positions. Nor am I stating this in hindsight, I stated this on LCS and Toledo Talk prior to Feburary 1st.

It bothers me that the civil lawsuit that was filed in May of 2004 and written about here doesn't seem to have bothered the rest of them enough to question this.

It's just been announced that Bob McCloskey will plead not guilty and will not step down from his Council seat, only as Chair of the Economic Development committee. It doesn't surprise me, however if he really was concerned about what was best for the City? He'd step down.
