Stautzenberger College will aid in the renovation of Southwyck Mall with a 40,000-square-foot academic building in the former Lion Home Store, Stautzenberger President George Simons said May 8.
"We are absolutely delighted to be part of this project," he said. "It is a major change for us."
Simons, Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner and Larry Dillin, owner of Dillin Corp., announced the renovation plans for The Village at Southwyck.
Simons said the Board of Trustees has signed a letter of intent to expand into the mall by July 2007.
"It's not going to be another mall," he said. "It will be the re-emergence of the community and our charter is to serve this community."
Simons said academic programs including veterinary technology and private investigation will be available at the new site.
Dillin said the college is apart of the new vision for Southwyck.
"We've accomplished a major milestone and have positive support from the community," he said. "The college will bring a core group of customers back to a center of education and other stores."

It looks very pretty but if they don't get the second anchor or confirm that Dillard's is going to stay it's not going to go behind Phase I, which might be better than what we have. There's no date for Phase II and there is no date for Phase III which is the future housing. Granted it's early yet but alot more is going to have to happen in addition to Stautzenberger.

Doesn't anyone think that the decay of the area is perhaps irreversable, if not, will take several years to reverse?
Lloyd, I don't think anyone disagrees that it is going to take years to reverse. People are naturally skeptical because there have been other plans before that did not come to fruition.
With Statuzenberger signing on that is a positive, yet it is going to take more than just them to make this work. If Dillard's formally signs on it would make this seem more possible.
Statuzenberger seems to be taking a leap of faith.
It is a relativly small school and they have just a small building on the Boulevard, so the Dillards Home Store is a big increase for them!
