This morning's Toledo Blade as well as the majority of the media I saw stated something similar to this:
The murder of a woman found shot in the head yesterday may be connected to the weekend double homicide of two men who met a similar fate and were linked to a federal probe into a multimillion-dollar cocaine ring, Toledo police said.
“It all comes back to Operation Tailgate,” police Chief Mike Navarre said, referring to an investigation into a major Toledo drug ring that was broken up less than two weeks ago.
The family of Ericka Graham disagreed with her death being drug related.
Now it's been updated:
During a news conference this evening, Police Chief Mike Navarre said that, to the best of his knowledge, Ms. Graham appears to be an innocent victim and not involved in the recent drug-related homicides.
"I think it’s important to note that there is no information that Ericka Graham was involved in any illegal drug activity we were investigating," he said.
The murders of Tammy Cappelletty and Juan E. Ybarra have also been suggested as linked to drugs:
Capt. Ray Carroll said police believe two suspects were in the car's back seat at the time of the shootings, but would not elaborate on why he believes drugs were involved.
"A lot of this information is sensitive right now," Captain Carroll said. "I think it was drug-related, but we don't want to let a lot out right now."
I understand the public and the media wants answers when you have a situation where you have that many murders in a short time period but putting the families of the victims thru the additional pain of hearing that their loved ones death was somehow related to drugs isn't necessary, especially if it's not accurate...Sometimes, "We really don't know right now" is the better response...
