Konop to Call for Greater County Commitment to Safe Schools
Democratic candidate to speak to class at Lincoln Academy for Boys
(Toledo, OH) In the wake of several recent school shootings and a recent Blade article detailing security lapses within local schools, Democratic candidate for Lucas County Commissioner Ben Konop will call for a Safe School Task Force at the county level, a county-wide safe school conference, and greater funding to the sheriff’s department to address safety in the schools. Konop will outline his proposal at 10:30 am, Monday, October 9th at the Lincoln Academy for Boys at 1801 N. Detroit Ave. Media is welcome to attend the event.
“Students, teachers, and parents deserve the maximum resources of county government directed towards making schools safer,” stated Konop. “We live in a violent world, and although there is no fool-proof plan for safety in schools, as Commissioner I will work with the Sheriff’s Department to make sure our students are as safe as possible.”
During his talk with the students, Konop will also discuss public service and constitutional law. Konop, an attorney and professor, has taught classes including Legislation and Election Law at the University of Toledo College of Law, as well as the American Political Process at Bluffton University .

I have yet to hear an idea from Ben Konop that is either workable, or is already in place but he didn't know about it.
For a guy who is the "Candidate of Change," I would like to hear what major changes he would make that were made by the Democratically controlled County Commissioners. It wasn't controlled by the Republicans. What would he change?
The upcoming school press conference is something of a reach. Give me something more than that.
Why would Ben Konop get involved with something that would be taken care of by Toledo Police working with the Toledo Bd. of Ed?
How does the County come into play?
Anon #2, It's stated in the Press Release, there are other schools in this area besides just TPS. I can't give you specifics on this plan because all I have is the same information you do, the Press Release.
Waterville Dem, we have City Council candidates and City Council persons who do the same basic thing as far as calling press conferences for more police officers or increased officers in Toledo Public schools after tragedy too. Am I going to lie and say this is something I'm in support of doing? Of course not, yet if you are going to be embarrassed by him then I guess the list of others you are embarrassed by is quite long.
Anonymous #1, Sorry you didn't attend the debate tonight or the previous ones since some of your questions might have been answered. Perhaps when I'm done with all of the notes you'll find what you are looking for. If not? There are still plenty of opportunities for you to ask these questions of Ben and George.
And the sad thing is that when Konop is elected, he (along with Gerken and Skeldon-Wozniak), he will hand over control of Lucas County to Carty Finkbeiner (a la unigov).
Since no one appears to need any help bashing Ben, I'll thank you instead Lisa, for your excellent election activity reporting.
And, yes, it IS a thankless job, at times...
A countywide approach to a common problem does seem to be a logical approach though ;-)

Let him exploit away if it gets our schools changing how the hell they're NOT keeping the buildings locked. Obviously that's too difficult of a job for people to do, of course, when someone comes in and shoots our children then everyone will be complaining that no one did anything.
No, I'm not a Konop supporter, but at least it's some "fresh meat" in this stale Lucas County government! We need some change because this county is going down hill more each year and if someone doesn't step in and change something we'll be a thing of history when the next text books are written up!
Here's the thing....I think Ben has it right on the money.
ALL schools in Lucas County need more and better protection - this is obvious based on the story in The Blade. To know that complete strangers can just waltz into some of these schools, without being noticed sends chills down my spine.
My daugther is still 2 years away from attending kindergarten, but I am seriously considering home schooling -- just to keep her safe.
Ben's opponent said in today's Blade that such a program is already in place and that Ben's plan is just one more sign of his "inexperience." OK, George....it's time to find a new campaign slogan. Yours - "I'm older, wiser and have experience so elect me!" - is getting very, very old. Hey, here's an idea...why not come up with some of your own ideas for how to change the government in Lucas County? I guess maybe it's easier to just say "that already exists" - no original thoughts are necessary then.
If such a program exists, why isn't it working? Why was a Blade reporter able to walk into these schools without a second look?
Every parent in Lucas County should be demanding safer schools. Just yesterday a 13-year-old walked into his Missouri school with an AK-47 -- tell me how the hell a 13-year-old gets an AK-47? And how long will it be before some kid in Lucas County decides to give it a try?
It is time to get past the days of status quo politics and get some new, fresh ideas working. Years of experience does not equal good leadership - it normally means that things will keep being done the same ol' way. The old ways don't work anymore. It's time for change.
