McNamara Rejects “Trash Politics,” Demands Answers On City Budget
Across-The-Board Cuts Could Threaten Essential City Services
Toledo, OH – With Halloween just around the corner, the Mayor and Lourdes Santiago are playing political tricks with trash collection. Toledo City Council candidate Joe McNamara will hold a press conference today at 2 PM in front of One Government Center to address this issue and demand answers on the mayor’s proposed budget cuts for 2007.
Despite having announced a compromise on the mayor’s plan to move trash collection times twice in the past week, Lourdes Santiago is holding a public hearing this afternoon to highlight citizens’ dissatisfaction.
“This gives every indication of being a manufactured issue, a manufactured conflict and a manufactured compromise,” said council Candidate Joe McNamara. “Meanwhile the mayor is proposing across the board budget cuts that could undermine basic city services.”
“While the mayor and Lourdes Santiago are pretending to bicker over trash collection times, I want to know if the trash is going to be picked up at all,” says McNamara.
“Why is the budgeting process happening behind closed doors without citizen participation? Where are those public hearings?”

'Ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do or die' --- oh, wait a minute, this quote doesn't apply here, that is unless we all should be stifled as the power brokers seem to think we should.
I should also mention we still haven't gotten any notification that alley trash collection is either stopped for our neighborhood or continued but must be in cans only.
Supposedly we were going to be notified via flyer if our garbage was supposed to be now curbside and letter if it was to still be alley but in cans.

Nothing here either. I live in the Lagrange/Old Polish Village area.
Christine, while the Mayor and Lourdes are squabbling over the times garbage has to be put out for curbside collection, which will affect those of us who now do have to use curbside rather than alley collection we still don't have any answers.
My neighborhood as an example, if we are supposed to switch from alley to curbside our next trash collection day is Tuesday. None of us have received any formal notice and quite a few people over here don't read the Blade or apparently even watch the local news since how most of my neighbors found out about it was by talking to me.
Sounds like the Lagrange/Polish Village area is the same as the South End.
What's really dumb about this whole time argument is the simple logic...if the problem is rats and cats and dogs or like in my neighborhood raccoons or possums getting in the garbage a few hours really isn't going to make a big difference. Most of these animals get into the trash at night...since we have established there is no way they can demand residents take their trash out the morning of trash collection day? There will always be animals that get into the trash...

The problem, in my opinion, is not animals getting into the trash it is as the Mayor stated, people are putting out trash bags and cans too early, sometimes many days in advance. Trash is picked up on Friday in my neighborhood, Old Polish Village/Lagrange area.
It is not uncommon to see trash set out on Monday in the alleys and on the sidewalk.
At least the Mayor now recognizes that there is a problem and it is city wide.
I made the city aware of food wrappers being dropped at bus stops near my neighborhood and now after 30 days of waiting for an answer I have posted pictures of the same problem near the new Costso site.
Is that we want our city to look like?

Which begs the question; why not here?
"The trash collection people "rent" you the cans themselves for a monthly fee (which also raises additional funds for trash collection)...this way, everyone has "approved" cans...."
I suggested something similar to this when the talk of the collection change occurred.
The problem as I see it is; the leaders made a big mistake when the policy of unlimited trash collection was put in force.
What I mean to say is, people do not like change, we are all guilty of that. So when the system is changed there are complaints.
With an unlimited trash set out policy and with very little enforcement of the rules and regulations we are witnessing the reaction to change.
What happens when the landfills reach the capacity they can take? Build more landfills, haul the trash some where else?
All will require funding and change and the real fuss will start when garbage hits the fan then.
In the mean time we will watch our leaders not think through the actions and there will be back and forth to try and please everyone and the trash will be out front on the sidewalks and I will continue to complain to the city about the trash piles at the bus stops and the cycle will continue until one day the whole pride light bulb will click on and then the leaders will open their eyes to the way the city looks to us and visitors.

I agree that there should have been some more thought given to the changes but I do also agree with the fines or more correctly enforcement of the rules and the fines.
Many of the e-mails that I send to solid waste are about the same areas week after week after week. Trash cans set out 4 to 5 days in advance, trash bags on sidewalks and in alleys and by the time the actual trash day rolls round there is an absolute mess and then it does not get picked up by the people placing it out or by the city unless someone complains.
There has to be enforcement of the rules but I would think/hope that there would be warnings given as is the case now.
And it seems to be of little use to have foremen that drive around and monitor situations and report to management when they could be more proactive and be part of the solution instead of mere monitors of the problem.
